Records for Civic, Passport and Acura CL Drive American Honda Sales IncreaseTORRANCE, Calif., April 1 -- Best ever March sales of the Honda Civic and Passport, combined with all-time record sales of the Acura CL and continued strong demand for the new Accord, helped boost American Honda total vehicle sales to 83,450 units in March, an increase of 5.0 percent over year-ago totals, according to figures released today by the company. Year-to- date sales for American Honda totaled 219,350 units for the first quarter of 1998, an increase of 7.0 percent over the same period last year. Honda Division sales for March were up 8.5 percent to 74,522 units, while year-to-date sales of 198,076 were up 10.7 percent over last year, putting the division on track for another record sales year. "Civic sales continue to defy the trend, while demand for the new Accord shows no signs of letting up," said Dick Colliver, Honda Division senior vice president of sales. "1998 looks to be our best year ever." March sales of the new Accord were up 24.5 percent to 33,832 units, with year-to-date sales totaling 91,322 units, a 18.7 percent increase over the same period last year. Civic sales of 28,801 units were up 5.5 percent for the month, setting a new March record. Acura division sales of 8,928 were up 24.5 over last month, boosted by sales of the CL performance-luxury coupe, which set a new all-time one-month sales record of 2,548 units in the month of March.
