Audi A6 Avant: Europe's Most Successful Large Luxury Wagon Is All New For 1999 - On Sale Here in June

NEW YORK, April 9 -- Today, Audi of America, Inc. introduced
the 1999 A6 Avant to North America at the New York International Auto Show.
Based on its daring A6 sedan introduced last Fall, the new A6 Avant is the
result of Audi's more than two decades of experience in making large luxury
estate cars in Europe. Over 400,000 Audi Avants have been delivered to
European customers since 1977, making the A6 Avant Europe's most successful
car in its segment.
The all new A6 Avant decisively lays claim to the fact that Audi alone
builds large, luxury wagons that are as aesthetically and technically
appealing as they are versatile. With its luxury touring sedan foundation and
its spacious, adaptable luggage area, Audi views the A6 Avant as the most
desirable expression of design, performance and versatility available in the
market. It is a luxury touring wagon ideal for people who are attracted by
the concept, image and versatility of traditional SUVs, but who would never
want to compromise their desire for style, comfort, and exuberant driving with
an SUV or ordinary station wagon.
This new model takes all the essential attributes of the A6 sedan and
wraps them in an elegant yet efficient silhouette. At its heart is a 2.8
liter DOHC (double overhead cam) V-6 engine with five valves per cylinder and
variable intake valve timing. This combination delivers 200 horsepower at
6000 revolutions per minute and 207 lbs. ft. of torque at 3200 rpm, propelling
the A6 Avant to 60 mph in just 9.6 seconds. Available exclusively with Audi's
legendary quattro all wheel drive system, the Avant provides every driver with
that extra measure of performance and safety to tackle any situation. But
none of this compromises the versatility of this design. In the same overall
length as the A6 sedan, the Avant offers 36.4 cu. ft. of luggage capacity with
the rear seat in place and a cavernous 73.2 cu. ft. with the rear seat folded.
The 1999 A6 Avant will have a base MSRP of $36,600. Factoring in the wide
range of newly standard equipment, this price represents a 2.6 percent
reduction versus last year's model.
With its three different interior Atmospheres(SM), class-leading headroom
(front and rear), class-leading rear legroom, and innovative design, the A6
Avant is in a class by itself that should be on every luxury sedan, wagon or
SUV buyers' short list.
