New Chevy Cavaliers to Feature IMPCO Alternative Fuel System

21 April 1998

IMPCO Alternative Fuel System To Be Featured on New Chevy Cavaliers; `Bi-Fuel' Vehicles Slated For Sale This Summer

CERRITOS, Calif., April 21 --IMPCO Technologies, Inc.
today announced that its "bi-fuel" system designed and
developed by the company for General Motors will be featured on a number of
Chevrolet Cavaliers to be sold this summer. The system allows the vehicle to
run on clean burning compressed natural gas and alternatively on gasoline.
The bi-fuel Cavaliers will be equipped by General Motors with two separate
fuel tanks with the capacity of traveling 160 miles on natural gas before
switching over to gasoline for an additional 400 miles. Production of the
cars is expected to start in June, and they will go on sale soon after that.
IMPCO last year signed a five-year teaming agreement with General Motors
to further develop clean gaseous fuel systems for passenger cars and medium-
and light-duty trucks. "We are delighted that these new Cavaliers will be on
the market soon and that private and public fleet owners will be able to
experience first-hand the driving performance, clean-air and other benefits of
gaseous fuels such as compressed natural gas," said Robert M. Stemmler,
president and chief executive officer of IMPCO.
Last spring, General Motors sold Chevrolet C-2500 and GMC Sierra full-size
pickup trucks equipped with IMPCO's bi-fuel CNG engines. The alternative fuel
system was developed by IMPCO for General Motors under an exclusive agreement.
While the natural gas option on the Cavaliers will represent an additional
cost, the cost can be partially offset by tax breaks and incentives from local
utilities, noted GM and IMPCO. The bi-fuel Cavaliers are certified to meet
low-emission vehicle standards in all 50 states.
IMPCO Technologies, Inc. sells alternative fuel products and services
worldwide. Headquartered in Cerritos, CA, the company has additional
facilities in Irvine, CA; Detroit, MI; Seattle, WA; Mt. Pleasant, IA; Mexico,
Australia, the Netherlands, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. IMPCO is
a market leader in the Original Equipment Manufacturer marketplace and
aftermarket for gaseous fuel management systems and components that allow
internal combustion engines to operate on clean gaseous fuels such as propane
and natural gas. IMPCO provides conversion systems for motor vehicles,
forklifts, other material handling equipment, and small portable to large
stationary engines.
Certain matters discussed in this press release contain forward looking
information that involves risks and uncertainties which could cause actual
results to differ materially from current trends. These include growth of the
alternative fuels market, competition, the company's ability to design and
market new fuel management products, the company's ability to meet Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications, and other such risks as cited in
the company's 1997 annual report on Form 10-K and other documents filed with
the Securities and Exchange Commission.
