MichCon 'Revs-Up' Natural Gas Vehicles for Earth DayANN ARBOR, Mich., April 21 -- MichCon will drive home the benefits of clean-burning natural gas vehicles when it opens a natural gas fueling station in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Earth Day, April 22, 1998. The Ann Arbor station, located at the Meijers store on Ann Arbor-Saline Road, is the 27th public natural gas station in Michigan. MichCon plans to open five more stations this year. Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) are environmentally friendly, lower fuel and maintenance costs, and reduce dependence on foreign oil. Natural gas costs 15 to 30 percent less than gasoline and many of today's vehicles are able to travel 200 miles before refueling. "MichCon's continued efforts to add stations in Michigan make NGVs a viable alternative, especially for fleet owners." said MichCon President and Chief Executive Officer, Stephen E. Ewing. "Together with the automakers, we're addressing the need for an expanded station infrastructure as well as offering customers more vehicle choices." Ewing serves as the national chairman of the Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition. There are more than 1,000 NGVs on Michigan roads today and more than 60,000 nationwide. Many NGVs are operated by fleet owners and public transportation authorities. Locally, Port Huron's post office vehicles and Windsor's casino shuttle vans run on natural gas. MichCon's company fleet also contains 200 natural gas vehicles. MichCon is one of the nation's largest natural gas distributors, with 1.2 million Michigan families and businesses relying on MichCon for their energy needs.
