Hourly Associates Strike Timken Company's Latrobe Subsidiary
CANTON, Ohio, May 7 -- Production and maintenance associates
at The Timken Company's Latrobe subsidiary in Latrobe,
Pennsylvania, went on strike Wednesday night. Not affected are the
distribution and service portions of the business as well as all manufacturing
operations located in other communities.
The company and the United Steelworkers had been negotiating for two
months on a new contract to replace the one that expired on May 3. Some 450
associates are on strike.
The Timken Company believes this work stoppage will not materially affect
its 1998 financial performance.
The Timken Company is a leading international manufacturer of
highly engineered bearings and alloy steels. It employs 21,000 associates
worldwide and reported 1997 sales of more than $2.6 billion.
