Victocor 500 Head Gasket Promises Long Life for Diesels
LISLE, Ill., May 27 -- With the Victocor(R) 500 head gasket,
Victor Reinz is helping heavy duty diesel engine makers build ultra-long life
into their engines. Designed to meet high stress and extreme durability
requirements of engines intended for one million mile overhaul cycles,
Victocor(R) 500 gaskets provide crucial head-to-block sealing with these
engines. The composite gasket consists of graphite/steel composite facing
adhesive-bonded to a solid steel core and contains integral wire rings at
critical locations.
The steel core is three times thicker than conventional head gaskets and
provides enhanced stability and greater support for the wire rings.
The design and materials are patented by Victor Reinz. The gaskets are
engineered to seal at the high operating pressures of heavy duty diesel
engines, and for extreme applications, Victocor 500 head gaskets can be
designed to incorporate molded technology from Dana's Plumley Division.
Victocor 500 has been selected by major engine manufacturers for current and
future high output diesel engines.
"Extreme testing has shown that this design is virtually blow-out proof
and meets the most demanding sealing applications for heavy duty engines. The
wide operating temperature range ensures good performance for conditions
ranging from cold arctic starts to hot desert runs. Additionally, multi-
layered design provides high strength throughout the gasket," according to Tom
Dattilo, vice president of Dana's Sealing Products Group.
Since no binders are used in the construction, the gasket resists most
corrosive substances. Graphite layers remain stable over an oxidizing
operating temperature range of -240 degrees C (-400 degrees F) to 454 degrees
C (850 degrees F). The gaskets have extremely low relaxation, allowing them
to maintain sealing properties under low and moderate stress.
"High lubricity of the graphite facing helps to maintain sealing during
movement of the mating surfaces due to thermal and mechanical stresses.
Molded rubber ring inserts provide greater sealing performance at critical
points such as oil and coolant passages and pushrod openings. This unique and
patented gasket structure promotes dissipation of heat in the lateral
direction while also exhibiting high thermal conductivity due to the thickness
of the gasket," Dattilo said.
The metallic gray Victocor 500 gasket is available in six nominal
thicknesses from 1.49 mm (.0585 in.) to 1.85 mm (.073 in.) with tolerances of
+/- 0.08 mm (.003 in.)
