Inspections of Trucks to be Part of `Safety Week' Activities; PA State Police Also to Participate in Hazardous-Materials SeminarHARRISBURG, Pa., May 29 -- State Police will conduct motor- carrier safety inspections during "International Highway Transportation Safety Week," June 1 through 6, State Police Commissioner Paul J. Evanko today announced. Evanko said the random inspections of trucks for possible safety violations will be performed in conjunction with law-enforcement agencies in bordering states and with the cooperation of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Evanko noted that, as part of the week's activities, State Police will participate in a hazardous-materials transportation seminar from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 3, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Building, Maclay and Cameron streets, Harrisburg. The free seminar is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Safety Coalition, an organization that includes representatives from federal and state enforcement and regulatory agencies and from trucking and petroleum associations. "The seminar is designed to provide a basic understanding of regulations governing the transportation of hazardous materials," Evanko said. "This is an opportunity for shippers and motor carriers to work with enforcement and regulatory agencies to promote the goals of safety and compliance in hazardous-materials transportation." Additional information regarding the seminar is available at the State Police website at http://www.psp.state.pa.us.
