Harley-Davidson Announces New Motorcycle Engine: The 'Twin Cam 88'

    MILWAUKEE, JULY 10 -- Continuing a tradition of leadership in
the heavyweight motorcycle industry, Harley-Davidson announces the
introduction of its new Big Twin engine, the "Twin Cam 88."
    The Twin Cam 88, which will debut on many of Harley-Davidson's 1999
motorcycle models, follows Harley-Davidson's very successful "Evolution"
motor, which entered production in 1983 and continues in production today.
The Twin Cam 88 shares only 18 common parts with the Evolution engine.
    In developing this new engine, the company has remained true to the look,
sound and feel of a Harley-Davidson engine, while delivering improved
performance and durability.  At 1450cc's (88 cubic inches), the Twin Cam 88 is
the largest displacement engine Harley-Davidson has ever built.  The new
design delivers an eight-percent increase in horsepower and a 10-percent
increase in torque over the Evolution engine.  It also keeps the essential
qualities of a classic Harley-Davidson engine -- a 45-degree V-Twin,
air-cooled, push rod motor.
    In development testing, the Twin Cam 88 has already established itself as
a star performer.  Harley-Davidson engineers spent four years designing and
perfecting every engine component.  The Twin Cam 88 has undergone over 2.5
million miles of road testing through hot and cold temperatures, over bump
courses and on race tracks. Cycle World, the leading magazine in the U.S.
motorcycle industry, calls Harley-Davidson's Twin Cam 88 "...the best Big Twin
ever."

of the air-cooled V-Twin Harley-Davidson riders have come to know and love."
    The Twin Cam 88 will power all of Harley-Davidson's 1999 Dyna and Touring
motorcycle models, which represents approximately 45% of the company's annual
production.
    Production of the Twin Cam 88 began at Harley-Davidson's Menomonee Falls,
Wis., powertrain plant in early July, and will be available on select 1999
model year motorcycles at authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships beginning in
August.
    Harley-Davidson will introduce the Twin Cam 88 to the motorcycle press and
general media at a kick-off event, including demonstration rides, in Las Vegas
and in the Utah mountains on July 13-17.
