Freelander to Come to North America! All New Land Rover to Be Available in Early 2001 LANHAM, Md., July 16 -- Despite previous reports to the contrary, it was announced today by Dr. Walter Hasselkus, Rover Group Chairman and Chief Executive, that the enthusiastically received new Land Rover Freelander will be available in North America beginning in calendar year 2001. Speaking about the announcement, Dr. Hasselkus said, "The timing is right for Freelander to enter the American market. Freelander has already taken the 4x4 market by storm and we are now ready to introduce this new Land Rover to a broader public." Charles R. Hughes, President, Land Rover North America, Inc., said, "This is extremely exciting news. Countless people on both sides of the Atlantic have worked long and hard to make Freelander a feasible business proposition for the North American market. The launch of Freelander is another stride in LRNA's expansion and will add new energy and excitement to our business. Freelander has a character all its own and will attract a large array of buyers, some new to the brand, some already in our stable. This is truly great news." The North American Freelander will be available only as a five-door model and will be revised and updated to meet numerous U.S. safety regulations - and the demands and tastes of the North American sport-utility segment. Freelander is a tough and rugged Land Rover that is the featured vehicle in the 1998 Camel Trophy Adventure, to be held this August in Chile and Argentina. Land Rover North America, Inc., is a member of the Rover Group, importing Land Rover vehicles manufactured in Solihull, England. The Rover Group is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BMW Group, Munich, Germany.
