S.C. Trucking Association Hosts Truck Stop Cookouts to Thank DriversCOLUMBIA, S.C., July 29 -- The fuel isn't free but the food will be at three truck stops around the state where cookouts will be held by leaders of the industry to thank truck drivers for their hard work and safe driving. The roadside picnics are part of a drive by the South Carolina Trucking Association and several grocery retailers and distributors to recognize the efforts of professional truck drivers during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, August 9-15. SCTA Chairman Phil Byrd, President of Bulldog Hiway Express, Charleston, says the week will be filled with activities centering around the driver. Trucking companies will be hosting their own driver events and the trade group has mounted two interstate billboards and planned road safety patrols. "We want our truck drivers to know that we understand how difficult a job it is to operate large commercial vehicles out on today's crowded roadways, and that we all need to promote safe driving," Byrd said. Governor David Beasley has issued a proclamation designating the week as a time when all South Carolinians should recognize that "this country rides on the wheels of trucks and the men and women who drive trucks keep that system going."
