Detroit Isn't the Only Motor City Any More, Scarborough Study Says; Salt Lake City Beats Detroit for More Households Owning Three or More Vehicles

NEW YORK--Aug. 10, 1998--Salt Lake City citizens acquire more cars, according to a study conducted by Scarborough Research, the leading local market consumer ratings firm. Thirty-seven percent of Salt Lake City adults live in households owning three or more vehicles.
Those cities ranking after Salt Lake City were Birmingham (34.9%), Des Moines (33.9%), Albuquerque (33.8) and Wichita (33.0%). Detroit, traditionally thought of as the nation's "motor city," placed 28th, with only 24.5% of adults living in households owning three or more vehicles.
Major cities like Chicago, Houston, New York and Boston placed in the bottom ten, perhaps reflecting more use of public transit. Pulling up the rear were Boston (16.5%), West Palm Beach (16.3%), Tampa (15.6%), New York (13.9%) and last, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, with only 13.7%.
