    WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 -- 1997 was a historic year for the
American automotive industry.  Total vehicles in use in the United States
passed the 200 million milestone, sales of trucks topped the seven million
mark and production of trucks exceeded car production for the first time since
the end of World War II.
