Omega Research and Development Launches New Advertising and Promotional Campaign For CommandLink Wireless Automotive Control Module

ATLANTA--Sept. 21, 1998--Omega Research and Development announced a new major radio advertising and promotional campaign for CommandLink(TM), a wide-area communications system that enables owners to control electrical features and options in their automobiles from most locations via a wireline or wireless telephone. The campaign begins in the New York and South Florida areas to be delivered to a combined estimated listening audience of over 7 million. Radio stations will complement the ads with a series of on-air consumer promotions. Targeted to drive consumers to authorized CommandLink dealers, Omega spent an estimated quarter of a million dollars for the campaign that will run through the end of October.
"Omega is committed to working with our retail partners to deliver one of the best automotive technologies available to consumers today," said Bill Duffy, director, automotive aftermarket division of Omega Research and Development. "We want not only to generate awareness with our campaign, but extend our excitement of CommandLink to consumers."
By utilizing Motorola's one-way paging technology, CommandLink allows users to call a toll-free number to control automatic door locks, remotely start an engine to pre-cool or pre-heat a car's interior, and engage horns and lights to locate a vehicle. Additionally, CommandLink is a theft-deterrent system that enables car owners to remotely turn off the engine to prevent thieves from restarting their car. With police reports estimating more than 482 automobile thefts occurring each hour in the United States, CommandLink offers added security to protect consumers' vehicle investments. The capabilities of CommandLink enable automotive aftermarket dealers to offer an attractive price point and numerous benefits to their customers, while providing an additional channel to increase their bottom-line revenue.
"CommandLink resonates well with consumers because almost everyone can tell a story about being locked out of a car or waiting inside a frigid car while the engine heats up," said Duffy. "With CommandLink automotive aftermarket dealers can offer their consumers real-world solutions to real-world problems."
"My 18-month-old son accidentally locked himself and my keys inside the car," said CommandLink user John Bachman. "A bad situation was diverted by just calling and paging the car to unlock the door. My wife and I both think that CommandLink was worth every penny."
Market research commissioned by Motorola uncovered an 80 percent acceptance rate for this product category. Of the 600 respondents, 4 out of 5 indicated a willingness to purchase a product offering the capabilities of CommandLink. Additionally, because CommandLink utilizes paging technology, the automotive industry reaps the benefits of very low vehicle battery drain, the most cost effective wireless medium for moving data, high consumer confidence in paging efficiency, wide-area coverage and superior in-building performance (i.e. inside of a parking garage).
"Paging provides a cost-efficient way to provide consumers value added-solutions of safety and convenience," said Allan Spiro, marketing manager of Motorola's LinkWorks. "Similar functionality from cellular-based systems available on the market today will be more expensive than paging systems."
