Prestone: 'Change Your Antifreeze, America' When You Change Your Clocks, Change Your Antifreeze
DANBURY, Conn., Oct. 22 -- Motorists be warned -- if you
neglect your antifreeze, you run the risk of doing serious damage to your
engine. Without enough antifreeze, your engine could freeze up in the next
cold snap, or boilover from neglect.
Sean Lyon, Senior Product Manager of antifreeze products for Prestone(R),
suggests a great way for motorists to remember to check and change their
antifreeze/coolant. "Most people change antifreeze in the fall. A good way
to remember this task is to change your antifreeze when you change your clocks
back from Daylight Savings Time. This year, that date is October 25. The
clocks are usually changed on a Saturday night, so make it an easy weekend
project."
The antifreeze/coolant experts at Prestone Products have a warning for
those neglecting their cooling systems. "Most people know that
antifreeze/coolant helps prevent the radiator and cooling system from freezing
up or boiling over," says Lyon. "Few people understand that coolant also
contains special chemical additives called corrosion inhibitors that help
prevent serious damage from rust and corrosion. However, over time, these
additives wear out. The inhibitor-depleted coolant no longer can prevent
corrosion of cooling system metals. And that's where trouble often starts."
Change your coolant to avoid trouble like overheating, corrosion, clogging
and leaks. Repairs for water pumps, radiators and other cooling system parts
can be costly. The inconvenience of a breakdown is even worse.
