Caterham 7 to Race in the S.C.C.A. Sports Car SeriesBIRMINGHAM, England, Oct. 29 -- The Caterham 7 (formerly Lotus 7 1959-73 and the Caterham 7 1973 to date), has been classified to race as an E Production Race Car in Sports Car Club of America Racing for the 1999 season. The Seven has established a unique record over 40 years as a road or race sports car and a tightly controlled set of regulations provides very close one-make racing in the U.K., Europe and Japan. Commenting from the International Motor Show in the U.K. Chairman Graham Near said: "The Caterham 7 has been well known to enthusiasts in the USA, having won the 1992 24 Hour Sports Car Race in Ohio and sold for home assembly with an engine/transmission assembly approved by the E.P.A (Environmental Protection Agency). The classification by the S.C.C.A. continues the tradition with the Lotus 7, which first raced in the sixties and we are proud to maintain this tradition." Specification includes: Caterham 7 space frame chassis, 2 Litre Ford engine (135 bhp), 5 speed transmission, de Dion rear suspension, Full roll cage and race safety features, Prices from around US $30,000 The Sports Car Club of America organizes Club racing nationwide in eleven Divisions with an average each of 3 regions and a membership of 55,000. The Caterham 7 will have its' own championship trophy within the E Production Class.
