Chrysler Corporation's Mopar Achieves First CARB Approval For Factory-Developed Street Performance Parts
    LAS VEGAS, Nov. 3 -- Chrysler Corporation's Mopar
parts operation announced today that the California Air Resources Board (CARB)
has granted the first exemption certificates of after-market performance parts
to any automaker, allowing owners of select Jeep(R) sport utility vehicles and
Dodge trucks to purchase and fit these components for on-road use.
    The exemptions, which apply to 1999-model year and earlier vehicles, make
these systems legal in all 50 U.S. states.
    Mopar is committed to providing environmentally responsible parts that
meet customers' needs for enhanced performance, said Lou Patane, Executive
Director, Chrysler Motorsports Operations.
    The development of these parts was formidable, added Patane. Not only did
we have to meet CARB's requirements on every part on every vehicle, but also
in every combination. Moreover, we had to satisfy Chrysler's own standards of
durability and quality to ensure that our owners' expectations are fully met.
    CARB's standards were made significantly more stringent by the
introduction of stricter exhaust emission (Low Emission Vehicle or LEV) and
engine monitoring (On-Board Diagnostics stage 2 or OBDII) regulations.
    The parts certified offer significantly enhanced performance for owners of
Jeep(R) vehicles using the 4.0-liter in-line six cylinder engine (Wrangler,
Cherokee and Grand Cherokee), Jeep(R) and Dodge vehicles using 5.2 and 5.9
liter V-8 engines (1998 and earlier Jeep Grand Cherokee; Dodge Dakota, Durango
and Ram trucks) and 8.0 litre Magnum V-10 engine (Dodge Ram).
    Parts available for each engine include:

    * Cold air intake/low resistance air cleaner
    * Performance module (re-tuned engine control computer)
    *  Performance camshaft
    *  Exhaust headers
    *  Performance (Cat-Back) exhaust.

    Certification allows parts to be fitted individually, in combination or as
a complete package to each engine and applies to all 50 U.S. states. Parts
can be fitted to 1999-model and earlier vehicles.
    The Mopar Performance Parts program offers thousands of performance parts
and accessories. The CARB-certified engine performance parts are part of a
significantly enhanced product line-up of Mopar Performance Parts, including
crate motors and parts for Dodge Viper, Dodge Neon and Plymouth Neon cars.
    Mopar Performance Parts are available through a network of Mopar
Performance Parts dealers, many of whom are Chrysler Corporation retail
dealers. Further information can be obtained by calling the Mopar Performance
Tech Line on 248-853-7290.
