Motorola and Glenayre Paging Symposium Reveals High Potential for Advanced and Two-Way Paging

FORT WORTH, Texas--Nov. 30, 1998--The outlook for advanced and two-way paging in Asia is a healthy one measured by the success of an international paging symposium jointly organized by Motorola and Glenayre.
More than 300 senior representatives from paging operators in eight Asian countries attended the ReFLEX(TM) Technology Symposium `98 to exchange information on the latest ReFLEX protocol-based technology and applications, network migration strategies, and market findings on two-way paging.
The just-completed symposium was a road show that began in Beijing and then traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, before concluding in Bangkok, Thailand.
"With more than ninety million paging subscribers, Asia represents a huge potential market for advanced ReFLEX protocol-based messaging," said Motorola's Fernando Gomez, vice president and general manager, paging products group east.
"In fact, by the end of the year, The Strategis Group predicts that another 26 million pagers will be sold in China, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand alone," Gomez continued.
"We are encouraged by the high level of interest in two-way paging expressed by the symposium delegates for the launch of ReFLEX protocol-based based services in Asia during the next couple of years," Gomez concluded.
"There was an extremely positive response from attendees who expressed great interest in the applications and efficiencies ReFLEX protocol-based technology enables, as well as the best strategies to migrate their networks," said Lee Ellison, Glenayre's senior vice president of sales and marketing, worldwide paging operations.
"The symposium gave us the opportunity to present the technical and business strategies Asia's paging operators can employ to offer advanced messaging services and applications."
PageNet, SkyTel and PCIA representatives also communicated the advantages and benefits of advanced paging during the meeting. Delegates from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, India, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States attended the symposium.
ReFLEX protocol-based technology offers cost efficient use of frequencies and makes new value-added services possible; e-mail, fax, electronic commerce, Web information, vehicle location, and information services.
For over 30 years, Glenayre Technologies Inc. has been developing leading edge personal telecommunication systems. Supplying products for both one and two-way paging networks, Glenayre also offers the industry's premiere migration solution from one-way systems to two-way functionality.
With over 2,000 employees and with products installed in over 100 countries, Glenayre's net sales exceeded $451 million in 1997. Additional information about Glenayre is available at: http://www.glenayre.com.
Motorola is a global leader in advanced electronic systems and services. It creates software-driven products that provide integrated customer solutions and Internet access via wireless and satellite communications, as well as computing, networking, and automotive electronics.
Motorola also liberates the power of technology by providing essential digital building blocks in the form of embedded semiconductors, controls and systems. Sales in 1997 were US$29.8 billion. Additional information about Motorola is available at: http://www.motorola.com.
