Gas Prices Drop for Fourth Consecutive Month, AAA Survey Shows


    ORLANDO, Fla.--Feb. 16, 1999--The national average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline fell 1.9 cents in one month to 96 cents per gallon, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report.
    This is the fourth straight month that prices have dropped.
    This month's average is the lowest since the price was 94.8 cents in August 1979. The current price is 15.4 cents cheaper than last February's average price of $1.114.
    AAA's report is based on data from more than 75,000 gasoline transactions.
    The average price of self-serve mid-grade unleaded is $1.058, 1.7 cents lower than last month and 15.1 cents below last year. Self-serve premium averages $1.113, down 2 cents in one month and down 14.9 cents since last year.
    Self-serve regular unleaded is most expensive in the West at $1.082 per gallon, down 1.1 cents in one month and 16.3 cents in one year. It is least expensive in the Southeast at 89.9 cents, down .8 cent in one month and 14 cents in one year.
    Other regional prices for self-serve unleaded are: New England, $1.001 per gallon, down 2.2 cents since last month; Mid-Atlantic, 95.3 cents, down 1.9 cents; Great Lakes, 94.1 cents, down 1.9 cents; Midwest, 92 cents, down .2 cent; and Southwest, 92.6 cents, down .9 cent.
    The national average prices for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline for the last six months were: January, 97.9 cents per gallon; December, $1.023; November, $1.055; October, $1.066; September, $1.057; and August, $1.075.
    The national average prices for February in the last five years were: 1998, $1.114 per gallon; 1997, $1.287; 1996, $1.129; 1995, $1.118; 1994, $1.069 and 1993, $1.093.
