Southern California Gas Price Average Continues to Decline


    LOS ANGELES--Feb. 16, 1999--The average price of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California dropped from $1.192 to $1.168, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report.
    This compares with a state average of $1.160 and a national average of 96 cents per gallon. The national average is the lowest since August 1979.
    Industry experts say that the price reductions are a result of continuing oversupply of crude oil which has resulted in crude oil prices falling to a 12-year low. February and March also are traditionally the lowest gasoline demand months of the year. Gas prices may increase slightly after March when supply and demand begin to even out.
    Southern California gas prices tend to be higher than the national average due to higher state gas taxes, higher cost of refining the cleaner burning fuel required in the state and a robust economy.
