Southern California Gas Price Average Increases Three Cents Per Gallon
LOS ANGELES--Feb. 16, 1999--The average price of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California rose to $1.192 from $1.168 in February, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report. This compares with a state average of $1.215, up from $1.16 and a national average of 97 cents per gallon, which is up one cent compared with last month.
California gas prices climbed more than the national average due to the shutdown of the Tosco refinery in Contra Costa County and the delayed restart of another refinery in Benicia. This caused enough pressure in West Coast supplies to send prices climbing. Nationally, prices have been inching upward due to increasing oil prices during the past month in anticipation of higher spring and summer demand. Gas prices may be further affected after April 1 if members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries agree to cut production by 2 million barrels a day.
Southern California gas prices tend to be higher than the national average due to higher cost of refining the cleaner burning fuel required in the state and a robust economy.
In Southern California, the averages for the four major grades of gasoline are the following:
