SAE Detroit Section To Host GM Truck Group Event May 11

20 April 1999

Society of Automotive Engineers Detroit Section To Host GM Truck Group Event May 11
DETROIT, April 19 -- Worldwide truck sales exceeded 16
million units in 1997 and trucks are forecasted to make up half of all vehicle
sales in North America in the next five years. The bottom line -- drivers
want well-built trucks. General Motors has given new meaning to
"well-built" trucks with its all-new 1999 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. The
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Detroit Section will host GM Truck Group
representatives as they detail the development of what industry analysts are
calling the "new benchmark in the full-size truck segment." On hand to tell
their story will be Michael Grimaldi, GM Vice President and Vehicle Line
Executive, Full-Size Trucks; Ken Sohocki, GM Chief Engineer, Full-Size Trucks;
Mike Bailey, Director of Suspension, Steering and Chassis Hardware Design;
Maryann Combs, Director of Body Structures; and Jim Federico, Engineering
Director -- Chassis Systems.
Motor Trend magazine dubbed these vehicles the "new standard" in full-size
pick-ups for good reason, they embody many achievements over both predecessors
and competitors. Designed to be the roomiest and most accommodating pickups
in the segment, the new Silverado and Sierra have the biggest extended cabs
around offering an additional 3.7 inches from the front bumper to back of the
cab, improving front head room, rear shoulder and leg room. These trucks
introduce the industry's first hydroformed modular three-piece frames,
designed to facilitate manufacture, assembly and repair. Powered by three new
Vortec V8 engines, the Silverado and Sierra can easily handle any payload
configuration. The light-duty Vortec 4800 V8 generates 255 hp at 5200 rpm. A
medium-duty Vortec 5300 is more powerful, yet displaces less volume than the
5700 light-duty truck engine it replaces. For heavier jobs, the 2500 series
offers Vortec 6000 V8 that kicks out 300 hp at 4800 rpm. In response to
customer demand, the Silverado and Sierra provide exceptional powertrain
performance with superb towing and hauling capabilities. All this, combined
with more horsepower and better fuel efficiency, adds up to one hot new
dynamic duo for GM.
Join SAE as the GM Truck Group details the evolution of the Chevy
Silverado and GMC Sierra, on Tuesday, May 11 at Burton Manor, 27777
Schoolcraft Road, in Livonia. A cash social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. In lieu
of providing alcoholic beverages, GM will make a donation to Mothers Against
Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.). Dinner follows at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation
starts at 7:45 p.m. Reservations are required and can be obtained by calling
the SAE Detroit Section at 248-357-3340. Tickets are priced at $29 each,
$14.50 for SAE student members. The meeting is open to SAE members and non-
members.
