Murray's Automotive Expert Provides Insight on Preparing Your Car For the Summer and Road Trips
DETROIT, June 3 -- Warmer weather is time to start packing
the family car for a vacation. But you may not be packing the vehicle
completely. "Drivers for the most part are not prepared for any emergency
that may happen to their vehicle while on vacation," says Greg Jones, Director
of Training at Murray's Discount Auto Stores. "So they are at the mercy of
auto shops that are notorious for driving the cost of parts and labor through
the roof."
Jones recommends that motorists seek out basic written car care
information, or discuss it with auto experts, such as those at Murray's,
before venturing out on vacation. He also recommends having the following
items in the car to be prepared for as many emergencies as possible:

    * Hoses and Belts -- "engine rubber" is the second leading cause of
breakdown, and its consequences are severe and expensive. Carry an extra set
for your vacation.
    * Air Conditioning -- if your car is more than five years old, improve
your air conditioning system by converting from the R-12 to the more state-of-
the-art R-134a system.
    * Fix-A-Flat or Tire Compressor -- for flat tire emergencies and a quick
fix.
    * Tire Repair Kit -- includes tools and plugs, exactly what service
stations use.
    * Flares and Reflective Triangles -- to alert other motorists of your
vehicle in case of breakdown.
    * Jumper cables -- always a must for your car in case of battery failure.
    * Jump It -- portable power source to charge battery and provide
electricity for camping.
    * National Brand of Battery -- so it can be replaced anywhere.
    * Battery Buddy -- prevents battery discharge by turning circuit off if
lights are on.
    * Synthetic Oil -- better for extreme conditions, such as heat and long
drives.
    * Gas Treatment -- removes water, cleans and provides a protective coating
for gas tank.
    * Vision Blade -- coats windshield, protecting it from bugs, dirt and bird
dung.
    * Bug Wash Windshield Washer Fluid -- cleans bugs and dirt off windshield.
    * Halogen Xtra Vision headlights -- brighter and last longer, excellent
for trips.

Jones also has these suggestions in case of roadside emergencies:

    * Make sure the spare tire is in good shape and the jack is functional.
Hydraulic jacks are preferred to factory models.
    * Always have a roadside emergency kit, first aid kit and cellular phone.
