Brookly High School Gets Smitten

15 June 1999

Jimmy Smits to Be Present When Local High School Students ``Get Wired''

General Motors, in conjunction with MOUSE (Making Opportunities for Upgrading
Schools & Education) will be wiring Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.,
Jimmy Smits' alma mater, for Internet access.

The wiring serves to honor the national launch of GM BuyPower, General Motors'
Internet car shopping and buying service. In addition to making e-commerce
possible, the Internet is a valuable educational tool, especially as we approach
the millennium. GM believes that all students deserve access to the Web and hopes
the wiring will encourage other corporations to step up and bring technology to
inner city schools throughout the nation. As a way to say "thank you" to Jimmy
Smits for playing the role of the first consumer to use GM BuyPower to shop for
a new vehicle, GM selected his high school for the commemorative wiring.

MOUSE is a nonprofit organization providing volunteer manpower and technical
support to New York City's public schools. The following participants will speak
to an assembly of 300 students and be on-hand for post-event interviews:

-- Ann Blakney, national director of GM BuyPower
-- Andrew Rasiej, president and founder of MOUSE
       -- Jimmy Smits ("L.A. Law," "N.Y.P.D. Blue")
-- Lena Medley, principal, Thomas Jefferson High
