General Motors Committed to Cure for Cancer Through Donations to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

SEATTLE--(BW HealthWire)--June 18, 1999--General Motors, which has made a long-term commitment to cancer research, will join others in Seattle this Saturday in showing their support for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Foundation.
The E. Donnall Thomas Medal of Achievement Dinner, being held on Saturday, June 19, at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, will honor General Motors as one of the Inner Circle contributors. Jim Cubbin, executive director of GM's Health Care Initiatives, will be in attendance at this prestigious award dinner to join other business leaders united in the fight against cancer.
General Motors, in conjunction with the Northwest Industry Partnership and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, is connected to the same vision -- the elimination of cancer as a cause of human suffering and death.
Cancer research is a key philanthropic priority for General Motors. "We believe strongly in giving back to the community," said Cubbin. "The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is on the cutting edge of significant research advancements, and GM's contributions to the Hutchinson facility expand beyond the Pacific Northwest. The knowledge gained here in Seattle has worldwide significance."
In addition to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, General Motors contributes to a variety of health-related organizations.
They include Concept: Cure, a unique and creative collaboration between General Motors and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who have teamed up to fight breast cancer. The fashion designers donate their time and talents to create vehicles provided by General Motors for the Concept: Cure sweepstakes.
By making a pledge and entering the national sweepstakes, contestants can join in the fight against breast cancer -- and maybe win one of the vehicles. To date, from the three years that this partnership has been in existence, Concept: Cure has raised more than $2.6 million to benefit breast cancer research.
General Motors also contributes to Karmanos Cancer Institute, The Cleveland Clinic, Gilda's House (an organization in honor of Gilda Radner), the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia Society, the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the March of Dimes, Partners for a Drug-Free America and many more.
Cubbin went on to say, "I am proud to represent General Motors and our association with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and to know that we have helped bring all of us a step closer to discovering new methods for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer."
