Visteon's New NavMate(R) Navigation System Leads Drivers Down the Right Path
DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 9 -- If you never want to get lost
while driving again, Visteon has a technology solution for you. Visteon
Automotive Systems is unveiling its new NavMate(R) Navigation System at new
car dealerships nationwide.
Wherever drivers want to go, NavMate will help them stay on course with
the utmost ease, security, safety and convenience. NavMate provides the
latest technology in CD-ROM based navigation systems. It utilizes in-vehicle,
turn-by-turn digital mapping and easy-to-follow voice prompts and visual
directions on a 3.2-inch dash-mounted color screen, identifying locations
anywhere in the continental United States. The suggested retail price is
$1,799.
"Electronic navigation systems are already in high demand and will be even
more so in the near future," said David Peace, vice president of Visteon
Global Aftermarket Operations. "Traditional mapping just isn't as accurate
and up-to-date as necessary with new road construction and business
development. Today's drivers need quick and accurate assistance to know where
to go, and Visteon's NavMate will deliver."
NavMate locates, and directs drivers to, banks, restaurants, and thousands
of points of interest, whether a final destination is urban or suburban.
Users simply input the destination they wish to go and NavMate will accurately
chart the course to take. Through Global Positioning Software and Visteon's
unique "dead reckoning" technology, NavMate knows the location of the vehicle
at all times within 10 meters, and will map the quickest path to get to the
programmed destination with or without freeways. NavMate also can identify
the nearest ATM and gas station should a minor emergency arise.
    Special NavMate features include:

    * Route guidance screen with colorful, easy-to-read icons
    * Voice prompts which eliminate the need to take your eyes off the road
    * Map display with road names, vehicle route indicators and cartographic
       features
    * Pre-programmed categorized points of interest and address book storage
    *  Current location data
    * Destination entries by street address, intersection, point of interest,
freeway entrance/exit or personal address book
    *  Detour capability
    * Reroute calculation if turn is missed
    * Entire continental U.S. covered on only 3 CDs; one included with
system. Other navigation systems on the market require six or more CDs
       to cover the U.S.

Visteon engineers developed the special navigation software needed to run
the on-board computer system, which includes a gyroscope, GPS receiver and CD-
ROM drive. The vehicle's current location is determined by the GPS, gyroscope
speed pulse sensor and reverse sensor, which is matched against information in
the database.
"Our consumer research shows that there is increasing demand for this kind
of technology among drivers in the U.S.," Peace said. "In fact, both Japan
and Europe are showing dramatic increases in the use of navigation. Visteon
is poised to take advantage of this opportunity in the marketplace."
Visteon's Navmate will be available in Europe by the end of the year.
