Nomination Deadline Nears for Goodyear's 17th Annual North American Highway Hero Award
    AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 15 -- Don't let a heroic deed by a truck
driver go unrecognized.
    The deadline is fast approaching for nominations for the 17th Annual
Goodyear North America Highway Hero Award. Nominations must be received by
October 15.
    "Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company founded the North America Highway Hero
Award in order to promote a positive image of truck drivers," said Mike
Thomann, marketing director of commercial tires. "Over the past 17 years,
we've heard many stories of bravery and selflessness. We believe that the
general public, which too often sees a negative portrayal of truck drivers,
needs to hear these stories as well."
    Nominations can be made by dialing the Goodyear Highway Hero Hotline at
1-800-627-2118 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (EST), Monday through
Friday. The nomination form also is available on Goodyear's website at
http://www.goodyear.com . An independent company receives and reviews all
nominations to ensure the following necessary criteria are met:

    *  the nominee must be a full-time truck driver;
    *  the nominee must reside in the U.S. or Canada;
    *  the incident must have occurred in the U.S. or Canada;
    * the nominee must have been on the job or on the way to or from work,
       and in his/her rig at the time of the incident;
    * the nominee's truck at the time of the incident must have 14 wheels or
       more;
    * the incident must have occurred between October 1, 1998 and September
       30, 1999 to qualify for this year's program.

    After the nomination period is closed, winners will be selected from each
state in the United States and each Canadian province. Ultimately, the list
will be pared down to four finalists. The finalists will appear at the Mid-
America Trucking Show in Louisville, where one of them will be selected to
serve as the annual ambassador for the program.
    Goodyear supplies commercial truck tires as original equipment to a number
of truck manufacturers, offers a wide range of replacement tires to meet the
needs of commercial carriers and independent drivers and is one of North
America's largest retreaders of medium radial commercial truck tires.
