Goodyear Supports California Coastal Clean-Up EffortsSAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 16 -- Thousands of volunteers will scour the coastline on Saturday, Sept. 18, as part of the 15th Annual California Coastal Clean-Up Day. Goodyear dealers spanning the state have volunteered to accept and properly manage the disposal of tires retrieved by the volunteers at California Coastal Clean-Up Day. "As a responsible corporate citizen, Goodyear and many of its independent dealers welcome the opportunity to help restore the California coastline to pristine condition," said Goodyear General Business Manager Enoch Turner, Northwest Region. "In addition to ensuring the proper handling of these scrap tires, Goodyear will pay recycling or disposal costs on all tires removed from the beaches and waterways during this event. "Goodyear dealers are proud to demonstrate their environmental stewardship through their participation and in the process, protect the ecological integrity of our beautiful state," Turner said. Last year, Turner added, 50,182 Californians participated in debris collection and more than 800 tires were pulled from the shores. According to the Center for Marine Conservation, the official tabulators of the collection, the 1998 event yielded more than 1.5 million pieces of debris that weighed in at over 300 tons of trash and almost 27 tons of recyclables. Some of the more peculiar items included a coffin for a rat named Jack, complete with skeleton; a glass jar containing two voodoo dolls; and a picture of a man.
