Toyota Announces Expansion of Study Program in Japan for U.S. Teachers

20 September 1999

TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 20 -- Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS) today
announced that it would expand its sponsorship of a two-week cultural/educational
study program in Japan for secondary school teachers, by adding two new states.

In June 2000, a second group of 50 teachers will be selected for this
unique study abroad -- the Toyota International Teacher Program. During the
pilot program, teachers participated from four states where Toyota has
manufacturing plants -- California, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. Now
the program is being expanded to include Michigan and Missouri, two additional
states where Toyota operates major facilities.

"We were so pleased with the enthusiasm and interest among the first group
of teachers who traveled to Japan this summer," said Gloria Jahn, TMS
corporate manager, corporate philanthropy and internal communications, "that
the company decided to make the program available to additional educators."

The program focuses on four major themes -- education, culture,
environment and technology -- and how these affect industry and society.
Participants follow a rigorous schedule in several cities, including Tokyo,
Toyota City and Kyoto, to explore how Japan evolved from its traditional
culture into a modern, technologically advanced nation.

All direct program costs, including travel, lodging and meals are paid by
TMS.

Administered by the Institute of International Education in Washington,
D.C., the Toyota International Teacher Program strengthens Toyota's on-going
commitment to education. To date, TMS has funded nearly $4 million in grants
to kindergarten through 12th grade math and science teachers for innovative
projects in the classroom through TIME (Toyota's Investment in Mathematics
Excellence) and Toyota TAPESTRY.

Toyota has been selling cars in the United States since 1957 and
manufacturing vehicles here since 1986. It has manufacturing facilities in
Fremont, Calif.; Georgetown, Ky.; Columbus and Princeton, Ind.; St. Louis and
Troy, Mo.; and Buffalo, W.Va. Toyota also operates design and
research/development centers in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor, Mich.

Applications for the Toyota International Teacher Program must be
submitted by January 14, 2000, and may be obtained by calling toll free,
877-TEACHJP or e-mail: toyotateach@iie.org.
