RPS Teams With MADD Canada to Deliver Safe Driving Message; Small-Parcel Ground Courier to Distribute Red Ribbons to Businesses on December 15

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--Dec. 10, 1999--For the second consecutive year, small-parcel courier RPS, Ltd. has teamed with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) to sponsor the organization's annual Project Red Ribbon "Tie One on for Safety" Campaign that promotes safe and sober driving during the holiday season.
Every day, an average of 4.5 Canadians are killed and more than 125 more are injured as a result of alcohol-related crashes. Approximately 40 percent of all Canadian traffic fatalities are alcohol-related, and driving under the influence remains the country's leading criminal cause of death. Each year, MADD Canada asks motorists to tie a red ribbon to a visible location on their vehicles as a reminder to everyone to drive responsibly -- especially at this time of year which is traditionally one of the most dangerous for motorists. RPS's support of the campaign is a natural extension of the courier's ongoing commitment to highway safety.
"The entire RPS team of employees and independent contractors shares MADD Canada's vision to make our highways and streets safer for everyone," said RPS, Ltd. President Sid Ballinger, who noted that RPS consistently operates one of Canada's safest truck fleets. "Driving while impaired creates judgment errors that can be deadly. Anything that we as a company can do to raise awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving will benefit not only our drivers but also all motorists."
To reinforce the "Tie One on for Safety" message, RPS contractors and drivers across Canada will hand out red ribbons and chocolate bars to their shippers and consignees on Wednesday, December 15, encouraging them to support MADD Canada's efforts. Additionally, RPS's entire fleet will display red ribbons on their vehicles throughout the holiday season.
"Project Red Ribbon is a public awareness campaign that depends on volunteer participation to promote the message that impaired driving deaths and injuries are needless tragedies and totally preventable," said Carolyn Swinson, national president of MADD Canada. "RPS's assistance in spreading this message to the thousands of businesses the courier services every day is crucial to helping us accomplish our mission."
