Ford Bullitt Mustang: Designed to Win the Chase
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 -- Ford's newest concept car, the 2000
Bullitt Mustang GT, is designed with all the excitement of its namesake
classic Hollywood film.
The concept -- making its world debut at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show
-- pays homage to the 1967 fastback Mustang GT featured in the edge-of-your-
seat police thriller, the 1968 Warner Brothers film "Bullitt" with Steve
McQueen.
Many of the 2000 Bullitt Mustang's styling cues are based on the original
Mustang featured in one of cinema history's most memorable car chases --
Detective Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) in hot pursuit of bad guys through the
challenging streets of San Francisco.
"With the Bullitt concept, we have visually and emotionally recreated the
excitement of one of the greatest movie car chase scenes," says J Mays, Ford
Motor Company vice president of Design. "Still as popular today as it was
when it was introduced in 1964, the Mustang and the Bullitt concept show the
possibilities for customizing this car and keeping the excitement alive as
ever."
The Bullitt concept is a 2000 Mustang GT that has been modified to
resemble the Mustang used in the film.
It features new front and rear fascia, a new hood, front and rear lamps,
five-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels reminiscent of the originals, unique gauges
on the instrument panel and racing-inspired seats.
The exterior body panels are finished in pursuit green.
Since the Mustang made its debut at the New York World's Fair in 1964,
Ford has continued to combine the spirit of the original vehicle with new
features and customization possibilities that delight current customers.
Mustang has remained the sales leader in its segment for the past 13 years.
More than 6.9 million Mustangs have been sold since this American legend
first rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Mich. This all-American
sports car has become one of the legendary automotive brands.
