AAA Michigan: Freeway Courtesy Patrol Will Cruise for Auto ShowDEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 13 -- The Freeway Courtesy Patrol vans that routinely cruise Detroit-area freeways may not seem as sporty as some of the cars inside Cobo Hall during the 2000 North American International Auto Show, but they may come in handy. AAA Michigan -- which operates the free emergency service on behalf of the Alliance for a Safer, Greater Detroit -- has announced extended hours for the vans to accommodate anticipated heavy traffic during the upcoming Auto Show, Jan. 15-23. Two vans will patrol portions of I-94, I-75, the Lodge, I-375 and Jefferson, during Saturday and Sunday from 3-10:30 p.m. (except the last Sunday, Jan. 23, when vans will operate from 3-7:30 p.m.). During the week (Monday through Friday), one Freeway Courtesy Patrol van will make scheduled runs (3-10:30 p.m.) through the Jefferson Avenue area to check for motorists in trouble. Since September 1994, the Freeway Courtesy Patrol program has continued to provide responsive mechanical and personal assistance to motorists on major freeways within Detroit city limits and adjacent communities. Since program inception, 34,218 motorists have been assisted, with a 99.8-percent customer satisfaction rating. It places up to six well-equipped emergency vans on selected segments of I-75, I-94, I-96, M-10, I-696 and M-38.
