Ford Adds 1994 & 1995 Rear-Wheel Drive Cars to Warranty Extension

27 April 2000

Ford Adds 1994 & 1995 Rear-Wheel Drive Cars to 3.8l Engine Head Gasket Warranty Extension
DEARBORN, Mich., April 26 In the interest of customer
satisfaction, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) is expanding a previously announced
extended warranty on 1994 and 1995 3.8L V-6 engine head gaskets to also cover
rear-wheel drive cars powered by this engine.
Now, the 1994 and 1995 Ford Thunderbird and Mustang, and Mercury Cougar,
with the 3.8L engine will also be covered for head gasket failure for 7 years
or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
On Feb. 25, Ford announced that it was extending the head gasket warranty
on front-wheel drive versions of this engine for these two model years, which
included the 1994 Lincoln Continental, 1994 and 1995 Ford Taurus and Mercury
Sable, and the 1995 Ford Windstar.
"While we have addressed head gasket failures in 1994 and 1995 front-wheel
drive vehicles with the 3.8L engine, we have become aware that owners of 1994
and 1995 rear-wheel drive vehicles with these engines are also having
failures," said Ann O'Neill, director, vehicle service and programs, Ford
Customer Service Division. "We have looked at the data, listened to our
customers, and have decided to include these vehicles in the warranty
extension as well, because customer satisfaction is our number one priority."
Owners of these vehicles who experienced head gasket failures during the 7
year/100,000 time frame will be eligible for a full refund for past repairs,
or may choose a $4,000 certificate to be used towards the purchase or lease of
a new Ford, Mercury or Lincoln.
Vehicle owners will receive a communication from Ford via first-class mail
in May explaining the warranty extension.
