Magna Workers Vote for UAW RepresentationDETROIT - A majority of the 500 auto parts workers at Magna's Brighton Interior Systems plant have voted in favor of union representation by the International Union, UAW. Union supporters won the vote by a 263 to 172 margin. They will join over 800 Magna workers at Magna plants in St. Louis and Excelsior Springs, Missouri who are presently members of the UAW. Union supporters were not able to win a majority vote at the company's Versatrim plant in Howell, Michigan. Results at the company's Auburn Hills plant indicate a tie, with 25 workers voting in favor of union representation, and 25 voting against. "While this is a great victory for Magna workers at Brighton," said UAW President Stephen P. Yokich, "no workers anywhere should have to put up with the law-breaking tactics used by Magna in opposing the workers' desire for union representation." During the election campaign, company officials physically and verbally assaulted workers, illegally suspended workers who wore T-shirts with the slogan "UAW-GM Quality Network," illegally threatened to close or relocate company operations, and committed numerous other violations of Federal labor law. "Many Americans would be shocked to learn of the abuse suffered by men and women who stand up for democracy in the workplace," said UAW Vice President Bob King who directs the union's National Organizing Department. "The victory won by Magna workers today is truly impressive, given the circumstances under which the elections were held," added King. In an unusual development, because of the number and nature of unfair labor practices filed by the workers, the vote count at four Magna facilities in Alto, Boyne City, Warren, and Troy has been delayed by the NLRB, pending the investigation of the unfair labor practices.
