Trimble GPS Makes Driving Safer and More Secure in BritainSUNNYVALE, Calif. - Trimble announced today that Trafficmaster has selected its Global Positioning System technology for the Royal Automobile Club's Trackstar, a new vehicle security service that makes driving safer and more secure in mainland Britain. RAC Trackstar is a joint venture between RAC, Trafficmaster and Haymarket Magazines Ltd. The system combines GPS technology with a specially designed GSM wireless communications module to provide instant notification of a vehicle breakdown, emergency or theft. When a vehicle equipped with Trackstar is activated, the National Control Center is immediately alerted. The security service knows the vehicle's exact location and the motorist can speak directly to a control center operator for emergency or breakdown assistance. If a car is stolen, the motorist contacts the control center. The control center alerts the police and continuously monitors the vehicle until it is recovered. "We are extremely pleased to be working with Trimble, the leader in GPS technology," said David Martell, chief executive of Trafficmaster. "Using innovative GPS and wireless communications technologies, Trackstar gives motorists the peace of mind to make driving a safer and more secure experience." RAC Trackstar uses Trimble's Lassen(TM) SK II GPS module. The receiver is intended for OEMs and system integrators who require low-power consumption, maximum GPS performance and flexibility. The Lassen SK II is a small, high-performance GPS receiver with half-watt power consumption, designed specifically for embedded solutions such as RAC Trackstar. Integrators can easily add GPS with minimal impact on a system's power supply. Trimble's Lassen SK II offers the highest performance available in a miniature GPS receiver with fast signal acquisition, even in urban canyons, and reliable performance. The receiver operates in extended temperature ranges from -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. The receiver is also differential GPS (DGPS) ready for applications that require accuracies of better than two meters.
