REMINDER/Finest Auctions Announces: Labor Day Weekend Auction to Feature Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's BMW

    --

Jackie Kennedy Onassis's BMW will be featured at an auction of vintage cars and fine arts Thursday, August 31, 2000 of Labor Day weekend.
The auction will take place at the LTV studios next to the VIP terminal of the East Hampton Airport in Wainscott, Long Island, at 6:30 pm, Xavier Maignan, President of Finest Auctions, announced today.
The BMW is a blue/green Bavaria 3.0S six cylinder automatic 4-door sedan with tan leather interior which Jackie Onassis drove from 1974 to 1992. The winner at the auction will receive along with the car the title and transfer both with her original signatures as well as the owners manual. The car is in superb driving condition. The estimated price is $35,000 to $70,000. Other cars to be auctioned August 31 will be a 1973 Bentley T and a 1977 Jaguar XJ12L as well as a Dubuffet sculpture and drawings by Larry Rivers, Gauguin, Miro and Calder and a Signac watercolor.
The auctioneer, Xavier Maignan, established his reputation for vintage car auctions in Sag Harbor where he has held auctions each Thursday evening this summer at The American Hotel. "For this auction we have enlisted larger quarters at the LTV studios which hold 700" Xavier, a Frenchman with a family auction background noted. "Jackie's BMW has already generated great interest so we expect a large attendance".
Jackie bought her BMW new from Martin Motors on the Upper East Side while married to Onassis who purchased a country estate for them in horse country in Peapak-Gladstone, New Jersey. It was in this BMW that she would drive with her children each weekend to Peapak to go riding and fox hunting at the Essex Hunt Club. During the week she would use it to fulfill editorial commitments at Doubleday. As noted by her son, his mother had a "love of words, the bonds of home and family and her spirit of adventure."
"It was her one and only favorite car", says her Peapak neighbor Tom Rossiter. When she finally parted with it, I purchased it and put it in storage with my collection. The purchaser will get the original title dated and signed by Jackie in 1992."
