Delphi Automotive Systems Showcases MP3 Playback Receiver
(Delphi Exhibit Booth 15025, Gold Pavilion, Las Vegas Convention Center)

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 Delphi Automotive Systems
demonstrated its original equipment Communiport(R) MP3 audio playback at the
Consumer Electronics Show this week. Delphi leads the industry in MP3
playback development for new vehicles.

"MP3 playbacks are the wave of the immediate future," said Dave Wohleen,
Delphi executive vice president. "This technology is already very popular
among younger consumers and technology-savvy trendsetters. It is set to
revolutionize the way we listen to playbacks in our vehicles."
The Communiport MP3 playback devices demonstrated at CES use several
playback mechanisms. One MP3-equipped audio system houses a CD-ROM that looks
like a standard CD player. In another, the MP3 unit uses flash memory cards.
MP3 -- which is short for the audio part (layer3) of the MPEG (Motion
Picture Experts Group) specification -- is an audio compression standard that
emerged about two years ago and has been growing in popularity on the Internet
ever since. It enables digital audio music files to be compressed by a factor
of 10 or more without compromising sound quality.
With MP3 encoders, many music lovers are now compressing music off
standard music CDs, converting it into MP3 computer files for their personal
use, then copying the files onto recordable CD's or compact flash memory
cards. This enables storage of 10 to 12 times more music on a CD-ROM than on
a conventional CD.
These files can be played back four different ways on vehicles: via flash
memory, disk drive, CD ROM and direct wireless download from the Internet or
from service centers. Delphi has capabilities to integrate all of them.
MP3 playback receivers are among the new innovative products in the Delphi
portfolio that address the consumer demand for personalized entertainment,
convenience and mobile productivity in vehicles.
