I have a 1982 Olds 98 Regency Braughm with the over drivetransmission. Before the speedometer quit working it would try to shiftinto the highest possible gear as soon as it could and would continuallyshift between 4th & 5th. Now that the speedometer quit working it nolonger does that but, it doesn't shift into 5th either. Also, when I getonto the freeway the "check engine" light comes on after about 1/4 mile.Does the speedometer have a sensor to tell the transmission when toshift? How are these issues tied together? Is this something I can fixmyself (with the guidance of a manual)? Which manual?

Charles, you need to have someone with knowledge of the GM turbo 200-4R,this is a 4 speed light duty unit and the shift pattern you aredescribing is normally due to wear and tear or an electronic controlproblem that is not letting the unit "lockup". Each time the serviceengine light comes on it leaves a code on the computer, this can bechecked out by knowing how to jumper the ECU and read the codes that areflashed by the service engine soon light or by hooking the vehicle up toa diagnostic machine.
