PARTS MIKE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS
Speedometer settings
Hi,
I have a 1996 98 Olds with a digital instrument display. While driving
it went completly blank. The dealer put in a supposedly new one. The old mileage
was 2600+, in the supposedly new cluster the mileage read 14000+. I do not know
how this could happen with such a difference between the mileage.
My question is how is the mileage set in a new cluster? Is it set electrically
by someone? Is the old mileage stored in the cars computer?
Any help you can provide will be most appreciated.
Thanks
Ed. Davison
You need to get the dealer to correct the mileage, if they won't, call
the State of California, BAR 1-800-952-5210 and explain your dilemma. I
hope you can substantiate your mileage that was on the original
odometer. It had an electronic chip that registered the miles on the
vehicle, I would attempt to get it back from the dealer. For your
information and anyone else, when you go to a repair shop make sure that
the repair order they write has an entry for your name, address, phone
number, year, make, model and vin number of your vehicle, odometer
reading (in your case it wasn't visible but the microchip in it recorded
the last mile it had gone before it broke), license number, repairs that
you request and the total cost of repair that you sign and get a copy
of. If you are now disputing the odometer reading (when you have a
replacement it has to be certified by a statement under law that states
the true mileage was) then you will have to have receipts from oil
changes or other services that will affirm the correct mileage. You will
find that the information that I have given is covered by laws and
statutes, both Federal and State.
