Andretti wins at Miami
Michael Andretti won in the Swift's debut Sunday at the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami - the first victory by an American-built chassis in the last 14 years on the Indy-car circuit.
Andretti started 14th in the 28-car lineup, but came on to dominate the second half of the 148-lap race at the 1.517-mile oval at Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.
The first of the new California-made cars, used exclusively by Andretti and teammate Christian Fittipaldi, was delivered to the Newman-Haas Racing team on Jan. 15.
``We didn't have much time, but the guys at Swift worked around the clock seven days a week and the work paid off today,'' the 34-year-old Andretti said. ``But this car was good right out of the box.''
Powered by an improved Ford engine, Andretti pulled away at the end, beating Paul Tracy's Penske-Mercedes to the finish line by 4.202 seconds - about a quarter of a lap. The most recent Indy-car victory by an American car was by Gordon Johncock, who drove a Wildcat at Atlanta Motor Speedway on April 17, 1983.
