DAKAR- TAMBACOUNDA: SATURDAY, JAN. 4 1997 4 p.m. The TOTAL DAKAR Rally finally got underway this morning, but it was without one of the expected stars of the event, Jacky Ickx. The multiple Le Mans winner and victor in this event in 1983 was due to take part in the Dakar with his daughter Vanina at the wheel of a T1 Toyota. Unfortunately Ickx, who is one of Belgiums biggest sporting legends has been suffering for the last two years from a seriously debilitating illness, but had been much better recently. However, just two days ago, he was struck down again. Although he hoped that it would pass and he would be able to start - Vanina had even attended the briefing and had entered todays GPS points into her computer - there was no way in the end he was able to start. He has now returned home and everyone here on the event wishes him a swift recovery. As for the action, it was definitely Mitsubishis day, with their leading three drivers giving them a 1-2-3. Jean-Pierre Fontenay led the trio home to establish first blood for the Japanese manufacturer with the most experience on this event, followed by his fellow Frenchman Bruno Saby. Neither reported any problem, while third-placed Kenjiro Shinozukas only complaint was about the dust, but the veteran Japanese driver did say he particularly enjoyed the stage. The fourth Mitsubishi, driven by Hiroshi Masuoka also made it through in sixth, despite German co-driver Andreas Schultz feeling ill throughout the day. Jean-Louis Schlesser brought his SEAT engined buggy home in fourth place, which he was fairly happy about. "That was really twisty, with a lot of trees" he said. "It was very difficult for a two-wheel drive car. But the car performed impeccably. Its going to be hard to beat the four wheel drive boys, but some of the other stages will suit us more." Team-mate Kleinschmidt finished over an hour behind the leader. Nissan has not had the greatest of days. Its leading driver Thierry Delavergne, who won the T2 class in last years Dakar and in the Cross-Country World Cup has been suffering overheating problems and was blinded by dust from Servias car. He hit a tree and damaged a brake pipe on his way to seventh fastest time. Team-mate Salvador Servia lost power and had to slow, but made it through the finish in fifth place. The Portuguese Joana Lemos in a T3 version was forced to stop at the 128Km point and as yet there is no further new of if she has restarted.. Philippe Wambergue brought his Toyota through the stage carefully as he felt that there may be a problem with the front suspension. The mechanics will get the chance to check it out tonight. He was 10th fastest. Patrick Tambay was happy with the handling of his SsangYong, but was a little startled when it decided to make its own gear-changes! He finished the stage in 12th position. Team-mate Jerome Riviere had a bad start in his SsangYong, stopping after just one km with a gear-box oil leak. At first he thought he would have to wait for his service truck, but eventually managed to get going again, but had almost no oil in the gear-box throughout the stage. He has stopped on the road section to wait for his service crew to top him up, before covering the final kilometres to the bivouac He finished 18th. Tonight competitors face their last night in Senegal, before crossing into Mali. Sundays stage will really begin to sort things out. 505 km of stage and at the end no airborne mechanics, meaning those people that have service vehicles entered will have to wait for them to arrive before they can have any work done.
