Plymouth For 1999

By Carey Russ

Plymouth makes cars and minivans that are practical, stylish, and affordable. It also makes the factory street rod Prowler, which is less practical and affordable but certain to get plenty of attention. It gets a sophisticated new engine and wider color palette for 1999.

Most Plymouth vehicles have new-generation, lower-powered air bags for 1999.

Prowler

The world's only factory street rod took a break for the 1998 model year but is back for 1999, and better than ever. A new 3.5-liter, 253-hp V6 is found under the hood, and is matched to the "AutoStick" manually-controllable automatic transmission. The engine is also found in the Chrysler 300M and LHS, but has been significantly recalibrated for the Prowler's rear-wheel-drive configuration and higher-performance driving characteristics.

In the past, all Prowlers were purple. Now they can be had in brilliant yellow as well, and soon in black and red. You'll have to do the flames yourself.

Other changes to the 1999 Prowler make it lighter and quieter.

Voyager

For many people, Plymouth means minivan. The Voyager is one of the most affordable minivans made. Five versions are offered for 1999, including both regular-wheelbase Voyager and long- wheelbase Grand Voyager models. There are a variety of trim and equipment enhancements, most significantly an available integrated cloth-upholstered reclining child seat and revisions to the rear floor pan for greater driveway clearance.

Neon

The Neon enters 1999 with few changes.

Breeze

The Breeze is designed for young people who need a mid-size sedan but would like one with style and fun character. It has standard equipment upgrades, revised suspension tuning for greater comfort, and interior modifications for a quieter driving experience this year.

Power windows, mirrors, and doorlocks, optional last year, are now standard. The "Expresso" style package is again available, and there are some new color choices.
