Audi For 2000

By Carey Russ

Little has been left unchanged in the Audi lineup for the new year. The radically-styled TT Coupe made its debut last summer, and is now offered in Quattro as well as front-wheel drive form. Power is the operative word in the rest of the lineup. The high-performance S4 is added to the compact A4 line, the A6 has a choice of two new high- performance engines, and a new engine now motivates the flagship A8. The "Quattro" all-wheel drive system is available or standard on all Audis.

A4 and S4

Something new has been added to the A4 range every year since its introduction in 1996. 2000 sees the most change yet. At the top, the new S4 is a sedan in the spirit of the original Sport Quattro. A 250-hp twin turbo V6 engine matched to the latest Quattro all-wheel drive system and an aluminum-intensive sport suspension gives serious performance. Styling differences from regular A4 models are subtle. All have revised exterior styling and interior enhancements. 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder and 2.8-liter V6 models are offered in sedan and Avant (wagon) body styles.

A6

When it was new two years ago, Audi's mid-sized A6 was criticized by some for being underpowered. It had the same 2.8-liter V6 as used in the smaller A4. No criticism is necessary this year, with two new performance-oriented engines available in addition to that V6. The A6 2.7T shares the S4's 2.7-liter, 250-hp twin turbo V6, and the A6 4.2 has a 4.2-liter, 300-hp V8. All drive trains are available in the A6 sedan, while the A6 Avant wagon continues with the 200-hp 2.8-liter V6.

TT

New just last summer, the audaciously-styled TT Coupe is now available in Quattro form for even better handling.

A8

Audi's aluminum flagship A8 sedan has freshened styling and a new 310-hp 4.2-liter V8 engine. It is the only car in its class with standard all-wheel drive for improved handling in all road and weather conditions.
