GMC Trucks For 2000

By Carey Russ

New versions of sport-utilities and a name change for the flagship highlight this year's offerings from premium truck specialist GMC. The full-sized Yukon line is completely new, and the SUV formerly known as GMC Suburban is now the Yukon XL. Extended-cab Sierra pickups are now available with four doors.

Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali

The next generation of GMC's full-size Yukon makes its debut this year. At a glance, it may seem that the GMC Suburban is gone. Not to worry. To consolidate the GMC image and prevent confusion with that other Suburban in the General Motors lineup, GMC's version has been renamed Yukon XL. The Sierra pickup, new last year, provides the chassis for the Yukon. 2000 Yukon and Yukon XL models are built on the latest Sierra platform, and are roomier, more powerful, more comfortable, and feature improved handling and four-wheel disc antilock brakes. The upscale Yukon Denali has a higher standard tow rating and the "OnStar" driver assistance system as standard equipment.

Sierra and Classic Sierra

The core of the GMC lineup is the Sierra full-size pickup. The newest generation appeared last year in light-duty 1500 and medium-duty 2500 form. As before, a choice of V6 and V8 engines, regular and extended cabs, and bed styles is offered. The extended cab is one of the roomiest made, and gets four doors this year for improved access. The popular 4.8 and 5.3-liter V8s have more power. All Sierras feature four-wheel antilock disc brakes for fast stopping. The previous- generation "Classic Sierra" continues in medium-duty 2500 and heavy- duty 3500 series.

Jimmy and Envoy

The Jimmy, GMC's compact sport-utility, celebrates its 30th anniversary with the "Diamond Jubilee Edition" special trim package. The "Vortec" 4.3-liter V6 engine has more power and is now standard in all Jimmys. The Envoy compact luxury SUV has an even more sumptuous interior.

Sonoma

The upgraded "Vortec" 4.3-liter V6 engine is now standard in all 4x4 Sonoma compact pickup models, too. A new high-value base-trim extended-cab model is offered.

Safari

The mid-size Safari van holds up to eight people and has new safety and performance features this year.

Savana

Need something bigger than a Yukon XL? How about a Savana? GMC's full-size van features improved powertrains and increased trailer ratings for 2000.
