Jeep For 2000

By Carey Russ

It the Cherokee's turn for revisions this year. But serious off-road enthusiasts need not worry that it's been made into just another soft suburban wannabe. Jeep would never do that! The Grand Cherokee, new last year, and the Wrangler both have useful revisions as well.

Cherokee

The first four-door compact sport-utility vehicle when it was introduced back in 1984, the Jeep Cherokee has provided rugged transportation ever since. It was restyled a few years ago, and has further cosmetic accents for 2000. But the most important change is under the hood, where the redesigned, refined, low-emissions 4.0-liter "PowerTech" inline six-cylinder engine introduced in the Grand Cherokee last year can be found in some models. Cherokees are available with two- and four-wheel drive in two- and four-door body styles in a number of trim levels to satisfy every SUV need.

Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler is still the best turn-key off-road vehicle made. There is really nothing else quite like it. But just because it looks like a World War II-era Jeep thanks to a recent restyling, don't think it's not a modern vehicle. The 4.0-liter "PowerTech" six-cylinder engine can be found under its hood this year. There are a number of other mechanical revisions as well, and new equipment on some models. Three models are offered, with a choice of the PowerTech six or a 2.5-liter four- cylinder engine.

Grand Cherokee

Thoroughly revised last year, Jeep's flagship Grand Cherokee has minor interior and exterior trim changes for the new year. The 4.7-liter "PowerTech" V8 is now available in two-wheel drive models for those folks who need V8 power but don't need four-wheel drive.
