Dodge Cars and Trucks For 2001

By Carey Russ

On the car side of the Dodge business, Stratus is almost a synonym for new, with a new-generation Stratus sedan for 2001 and a new Stratus coupe. A new "Sport" option package and two more serious sport versions are offered for the Neon. The Intrepid sedan and Viper sports have minor enhancements.

Stratus Sedan
The newest version of Dodge's import-fighting mid-size Stratus sedan builds on the success of its predecessor. It keeps the roomy cab-forward architecture, but nearly every part has been redesigned and refined. A stronger body structure and re-tuned fully-independent suspension gives it a European feel. Refinements in aerodynamics and soundproofing make it quieter. The standard 150-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine has been revised, and a new 2.7-liter V6 makes 200 horsepower, 32 more than last year's V6.

Stratus Coupe
The Stratus coupe is the latest version of the car once named "Avenger," but more than jus the name has been changed. Chassis rigidity has been significantly increased, and the suspension revised for sporty handling and comfort. The standard four-cylinder engine has grown from 2.0 liters to 2.4, offering 147 horsepower, while the optional 3.0-liter V6 has an even 200 horsepower. With its blend of power and refinement, the Stratus coupe is Dodge's muscle car for the 21st Century.

Neon
"Sport" is the name of the game for the Dodge Neon, with a Sport package including cosmetic and suspension upgrades available for both basic trim levels. If that's not enough, the R/T model offers sport suspension tuning, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, special bodywork, and a high-performance 150-hp version of the Neon 2.0-liter engine. The ACR package dispenses with many comfort, convenience, and cosmetic items, but includes the hot engine and a competition-tuned suspension. Not a surprise, as ACR stands for "American Club Racer."

Intrepid
The stylish full-size Intrepid sedan has interior revisions and available front side air bags for 2001.

Viper
Viper, Dodge's bad-boy V10, 450-hp sports car, comes in coupe and convertible form. There is a new optional comfort group this year, and antilock brakes are now standard.
