Oldsmobile For 2001

By Carey Russ

Oldsmobile got model year 2001 off to an early start with the introduction of the second generation of its Aurora luxury sedan in early 2000. The rest of Oldsmobile's sedans and its Silhouette minivan and Bravada SUV have new performance and convenience features this year. Despite Oldsmobile's planned demise, an all-new 2002 Bravada will debut partway through 2001.

Aurora
The original Aurora represented Oldsmobile's rebirth when it debuted in 1994. The 2001 Aurora builds on that heritage, but is a completely new car inside and out. Two models are offered, one powered by the newest version of the 250-hp 4.0-liter Aurora V8 engine and one with a 215-hp 3.5-liter V6 derived from the V8.

Intrigue
The upscale GLS model of the sporty midsize Intrigue now includes the "OnStar" telematics system as standard equipment. Intrigues with the "Precision Control System" announce it to the world with special badging, and an air filtration system is standard on all models.

Silhouette
Minivan owners spend plenty of time in their vehicles, and the Silhouette is designed to make that time as pleasant as possible. A "living room with wheels" is what Olds calls it, and there are many detail enhancements for 2001, including larger video screens for the upscale Premiere model.

Alero
The smallest Oldsmobile, the Alero, increases its sportiness quotient with an available five-speed manual gearbox made by the German manufacturer Getrag.

Bravada
The Bravada midsize sport-utility vehicle mostly carries over from last year, with more standard equipment and new option packages. Expect an all-new 2002 Bravada, quite possibly the last new Olds ever, mid-way through 2001.
