Pontiac For 2001 |

Pontiac welcomes 2001 with what is billed as "the world's first sport-recreation vehicle", the Aztek. The Montana minivan has been enhanced for added versatility. Pontiac's sport-oriented sedans and coupes have new features as well.
Aztek
There is nothing like the new Pontiac Aztek. Pontiac calls it "quite possibly the world's most versatile vehicle," and has created the Sport Recreation Vehicle (SRV) category for it. A distant cousin to the Montana minivan, the Aztek combines unique Pontiac wide-track styling with sportier-than-SUV (or minivan) handling and a 185-hp V6 engine. Early models are front-drive; a sophisticated all-wheel drive system will be offered soon. A versatile interior can be made even more so with the addition of hiking, bicycling, or camping option packages.
Montana
There are mere minivans, and then there is the Pontiac Montana. It is offered in regular or long-wheelbase styles, and has many new convenience and safety features for 2001. Most notable is an available stowable third-row bench seat that folds flat into the floor of the long-wheelbase version.
Sedans and Coupes
The Bonneville was new for 2000, and so is little-changed for 2001. The SE sedan trim level of the midsize Grand Prix has a restyled front end; GT and GTP sedans and coupes have a variety of minor enhancements. Four-cylinder models of the compact Grand Am have a new five-speed manual gearbox made by German transmission specialist Getrag. The Firebird continues as one of the last muscle cars, with more power from its 5.7-liter V8 engine. The little Sunfire sedans and coupes have a few changes, and the convertible has been discontinued.
