Porsche For 2001

By Carey Russ

The word for 2001 at Porsche is "Turbo." As in 911 Turbo, as the latest iteration of Porsche's highest-performance sports car debuts. It joins the other members of the 911 series, the Carrera and Carrera 4, and the Boxster and Boxster S.

911 Turbo
Porsche has used its racing-developed knowledge and technology to make the 2001 911 Turbo, the most awesome Turbo yet. Its rear-mounted 3.6-liter twin-turbo liquid-cooled flat six is good for 415 horsepower, gotten to the ground by a sophisticated all-wheel drive system. Top speed and acceleration are at supercar levels, as is braking, thanks to massive discs and four-piston calipers derived from the Porsche GT1 race car. Ceramic composite brakes, the first offered for a production car, will be available. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual, but, for the first time in the Turbo, a five-speed "Tiptronic" automatic with manual shifting is offered. Although the Turbo has a racing heritage and performance, it is a fully-equipped grand touring car with all of the amenities expected of a luxury car.

Other 911 Models
The current 911 is also offered in rear-wheel drive Carrera and all-wheel drive Carrera 4 trim, with coupe and convertible models available for both versions. They have new convenience features and other revisions for 2001.

Boxster and Boxster S
The mid-engined Boxster family consists of the standard Boxster and higher-performance Boxster S. The "Porsche Stability Management" electronic stability control system is available for both this year, and there are a variety of detail and convenience enhancements.
