Suzuki

Suzuki For 2001

By Carey Russ

Suzuki has a comprehensive lineup of small SUVs, sedans, and wagons. Both its lineup and vehicle size grow with the introduction of the XL-7, the largest-ever Suzuki SUV. The Vitara, Grand Vitara, and Grand Vitara Limited Edition sport-utilities get new grilles, as do the compact Esteem sedan and wagon. The economical Swift hatchback is unchanged.

XL-7
The XL-7 is the largest and most versatile Suzuki yet made. It's 19 inches longer than the Grand Vitara, with a 12.6 inch greater wheelbase, and features a standard V6 engine and three-row seating. Extra-wide rear doors make that third row accessible, and the second row is adjustable fore and aft for increased versatility and comfort.

Several trim levels are offered, with two- or four-wheel drive. Even the Standard model is highly-equipped, with a 170-hp 2.7-liter V6 derived from the Grand Vitara's 2.5-liter engine, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors, and door locks with remote entry, and more features standard.

Other Sport-Utility Vehicles
Suzuki offers a wide range of small but rugged sport-utility vehicles. Unlike most of the newcomers in the field, the Vitara and Grand Vitara are built on a truck-style ladder frame and designed for serious off-road ability. The Vitara is offered in two-door convertible and four-door hardtop styles, with rear- or real dual-range four-wheel drive, not the pavement-oriented all-wheel drive found in most other small SUVs. Power is from a 1.6 or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The four-door hardtop Grand Vitara has a 155-hp 2.5-liter V6, for better performance than is the norm in its class. Two trim levels are available, with a choice of rear or four-wheel drive in each. At the top of the Suzuki SUV line is the luxuriously-equipped Grand Vitara Limited Edition, offered in 2WD and 4WD form. All Vitaras and Grand Vitaras have freshened interior and exterior styling for 2001.

Esteem
The compact Esteem sedan and wagon have freshened styling outside and new seat fabrics and improvements to the audio system. A 122-hp, 1.8-liter engine provides power.

Swift
The Swift hatchback is small, inexpensive, and extremely frugal with fuel. And, with 79 horsepower from its 1.3-liter engine, it has no problem keeping up with traffic. It's unchanged for 2001.
